Take your time to properly explore Iya

Staying in Iya

For those who have the time (and who are wise enough), staying overnight in the Iya Valley is often the highlight of their trip to Japan. The valley boasts a wide range of accommodation styles, including top-class hotels with hotspring baths, stays in thatched-roof farmhouses, hosted guesthouses, and a variety of cabins, mountain huts, and campgrounds.

For many people, however, figuring out things in Iya can be confusing. Some hotels use more than one name, the local buses are infrequent and don't always go every day, some places close on certain days or even for the winter, and other than with our guides, you will often have trouble communicating in English just about anywhere.

But we can help.

Though we don't book accommodations for you (but we give lots of details here for places to stay) no matter where you have booked, we can then help arrange all your transportation and tours into a set so that everyday you visit somewhere different, making your visit as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Examples of Multi-Day Tours:

Our Multi-Day Tours can either be fully guided, or just partially guided with using a taxi-only when a guide may not be necessary. Here are a few examples of some multi-day options, but there are lots of possible arrangements based on where and how long you stay, what time you wish to arrive and depart, and what you would like to see and do in Iya.

For some more ideas on what you can see and do during a Multi-Day Tour, please check the various tour options for our One Day Guided Tours.

3 Night Iya Tour Plan

Staying 2 Nights at a Traditional Farmhouse and 1 Night at a Hotspring Hotel

(similar itinaries also possible if staying all 3 nights at either a hotel or farmhouse)

Fully immerse yourself into rhythms of the Iya Valley as you experience all that this magical place has to offer!

(please note that you will need to book any accommodation yourself)

Day 1 (half-day taxi & optional guide**)

  • Meet your guide and be taken by taxi to the Oboke Gorge Boat Cruise. If coming in early, also go to have lunch at a local restaurant.
  • If time allows, be taken by taxi to various viewpoints in the Oboke and Koboke Gorge areas, and then drive up through the entirety of the Iyakei Gorge upon the original (and now rarely used) road into the Iya Valley, visiting some lovely viewpoints along the way, as well as the main Kazurabashi Vine Bridge.
  • Head deeper into the valley, and upon arrival at your farmhouse stay, have your guide introduce you to your hosts and help explain the arrangements.
  • Settle in to the classic house and perhaps help the host with some of the day's chores. Enjoy their dinner set of local delights along with a bottle of warm sake (all farmhouses have different hosting and meal arrangements)

Day 2 (taxi & guide)

  • After breakfast, be picked up by your taxi and guide for a day of discovering Iya's rich history and culture.
  • On your full day tour you can first walk through a historic village along ancient paths, and then learn how to make the famed Iya Soba Noodles by hand. • Return to your farmhouse for another relaxing evening and maybe another bottle of sake.

Day 3 (taxi & guide)

  • After breakfast, be picked up by your taxi and guide, and head to the deepest end of the Iya Valley for a day of exploring the mountains.
  • Stop by the curious Scarecrow Village along the way, as well as the enchanting Double Vine Bridges, and then continue on to the base of Mt Tsurugi or another Iya mountain
  • Either choose to go hiking or simply take the chairlift half-way up the mountain and enjoy the deep valley views from there.
  • If you choose to hike further, be led by your guide to the mountain top or do it yourself if you are confident enough, with a hike either here or elsewhere ranging from 2 to 6 hours (Iya's tallest mountain, Mt Tsurugi, is actually one of the easiest and quickest to climb, though with any other mountain we strongly recommend using a guide).
  • Be taken to a hotel in the central valley (Nishi-Iya area) and sooth your muscles in their bubbling hotspring bath, and then enjoy a full set kaiseki dinner.

Day 4 (taxi only, no guide)

  • After breakfast maybe have one final dip into the hotspring bath.

To Arrange a Multi-Day Tour:

The prices for our Multi-Day Tours are based on how long you plan to stay in the Iya Valley, where you are staying for the night, total guide and taxi time needed, and what type of sights or activities you are interested in.

Many visitors travel to the area by train via Oboke Station, but we can also arrange pick-up or drop-off with our vehicles from just about anywhere in Shikoku if you prefer. On your arrival and departure days we can take you to and from your accommodation, and if time allows (as explained in the Example Tours above) we can also arrange a Partial or even a Full Day Tour on these days. We can also give tips on some interesting spots near your accommodation you may wish to explore on your own.

Tour routes and schedules will be based on not just when you arrive and depart from the station, but also where it is that you are staying, so it is important for us to know this to set things up. If you have questions about a certain accommodation, we may be able to help, but we do not do the accommodation booking, so once you reserve your place to stay, we can then create a fantastic tour!
